Studio BAD have been appointed to deliver a contemporary concept development of the existing church building and grounds, the brief was to reimagine the church building to enhance the sacred space for worship, but also to enhance the offer to the community with hospitality, community gardening, shared office and relocate the café to be more welcoming on street level.

Current building and entrance acts as a visual barrier to visitors, our designs look to visibility enhance the building to the community, our designs look to restore and give better presence of the assets already in place. Externally the church sits within a generous outdoor space, dotted with beautiful mature trees, the redevelopment offers an opportunity to reimagine the space and create an inclusive community gardens.

Our concept would update the external façade of the church, making the entrance more transparent with activity from outside. To upgrade the exterior by adds cladding to transform the building with a contemporary feel. The design also adds a wooden, open canopy to the entrance and café terrace, to give a covered and semi-private area that link to the structural timber ribs found inside the building.

To create a lighter and brighter interior the design introduces additional glazing to the meeting rooms, kitchen and office space, including bi-folding doors to fully open the space up to the terrace and gardens beyond.

In the gardens we propose introducing three key outdoor zones, to the east a morning courtyard linked to the worship hall, to the south a bed kitchen garden connected to the kitchens, and to the west an evening social space with links to the church café.
