LOW ENERGY RENOVATION

The owners approached Studio BAD to extend and sustainably upgrade their existing home, located within a rural plot in Twyford, Hampshire. Planning has now been achieved for the proposal, which sensitively extends the house to keep the mass and form of the existing home, which carefully reduces the impact to the surroundings. Through reusing the existing wooden frame and foundations, the project seeks to be as sustainable, reducing unnecessary demolition and waste.

The design looks to address the current challenges of the home for the growing family, modestly extending the current space to allow the home to be successfully reconfigured the space to make the interior layout suitable for 21st century family living. On the ground floor the scheme enhances the open plan living area with improved connectivity to the garden. Additional accommodation will be created in the existing loft conversion, with dormers introduced to make more of the first floor space usable. The dormer windows are uniquely designed with the windows set at an angle, reducing any issues with overview to the neighbouring properties.

A full review of the energy efficiency of the dwelling is a key part of the proposal. The external cladding will be replaced to upgraded thermal properties of the home; all windows and doors will also be upgraded to better performing versions, many of window openings will be pulled down to ground level to maximise the views to the garden, and increase the natural daylight drawn into the home. The roof will be replaced, with enhanced thermal properties, the roof line will be slightly raised to make the first floor more comfortable for the additional accommodation.

An external colonnade is to be added to the south side, to help mitigate overheating during the warmer summer months and also to create a covered outdoor space that extends the time the clients can use the garden.

The completed design will deliver a comfortable, energy efficient dwelling that offers great flexibility to the layout within, helping to future proof the family home by making it adaptable to the many phases of family life.

Client testimonial
‘We’re absolutely delighted with Studio BAD’s work and have recommended them to anyone who’ll listen! Their approach was faultless. Darren and Amanda listened, challenged and responded throughout. And we couldn’t be happier with their design – a family home that’s architecturally novel, sympathetic to the area, sustainable, and which cleverly maximised both the space and budget. Everyone keeps complimenting how it looks, which is thanks to them.’
