REIMAGINING THE CHURCH ASSET
Studio BAD have completed a detailed feasibility study of Hellier House to explored the redevelopment opportunity of the modern building owned by the church, that sits adjacent to Woodlands Church and the modern apartment building, located in Clifton, Bristol.
The existing structure appears visually and architecturally out of place alongside the striking heritage church; it is also in need of a sustainability overhaul to improve the energy efficiency.
To maxmise the opportunity of the site, and to deliver a building fitting for the position, the proposal delivers a replacement building which has been extended upwards with the addition of two additional floors. The design of the replacement building takes design cues from the form and materiality from the existing church, delivering a contemporary building which sits subservient to the beautiful church. A glazed link between the two buildings creates a clear and physical connection, unifying the site and offering a reconsidered entrance for the church, community amenities, and the apartments.
Internally, the additional floors provide flexible multifunctional space, alongside a kitchen and supporting amenities. The scheme also reinstates the existing three residential apartments, maximising church’s asset with a revenue stream, and their community support with much needed housing.
