MAXIMISING A GARDEN PLOT
Working with the owners of Paddock House, we explored the potential to redevelop the site using thoughtful design to replace the existing dwelling and create an additional new home within the generous grounds.
Located in the village of Brockenhurst, at the heart of the New Forest National Park, the existing bungalow was tired, small in scale for the plot, and in need of a sustainable overhaul. After investigation, we determined that the existing building fabric was not suitable for a substantial renovation, and therefore proposed a new home designed specifically for the site.
Our design carefully responds to the rural setting, while also considering the plot ratios of neighbouring village homes. The aim is to deliver a new house that is balanced and appropriate for its context, while reaching the full potential of the site.
The replacement dwelling will provide a low-energy, contemporary home with five ensuite bedrooms. An L-shaped plan maximises views across the grounds, with all principal rooms enjoying direct connections to the garden. At the entrance, a large double-height space creates an impressive yet practical arrival experience. The open-plan kitchen-dining area sits at the rear of the house, flowing seamlessly onto a garden terrace.
On the adjacent paddock plot, we have also developed Paddock Garden, a new contemporary three-bedroom dwelling designed to echo the materiality and form of Paddock House. The open-plan ground floor is framed by large glazed openings, creating a strong visual and physical connection between the home and the garden.
