CONTEMPORARY REPLACEMENT DWELLING

Working in collaboration with the owners, Studio BAD have delivered a feasibility study for the replacement of an existing bungalow with a contemporary family home in the north of the New Forest National Park.

A replacement dwelling was investigated as the existing bungalow is of poor construction and sits close to the western site boundary and adjacent road. This setting limits privacy and restricts the existing dwelling’s relationship with its landscape setting. Working within the parameters of the existing planning permission, the project explores how a carefully considered replacement dwelling can better respond to the site while meeting the needs of the new owners.

Given the sensitive National Park setting, the design is shaped by a number of planning and contextual constraints. The objective is to create a high-quality, contemporary three-bedroom eco-bungalow that is carefully integrated into its surroundings.

The proposed dwelling is positioned to make the most of the site’s orientation, outlook and landscape, while creating a greater sense of privacy. The arrangement of the building and its openings is carefully considered to maximise natural daylight, particularly within the principal living spaces, while strengthening the connection between the house and garden.

Internally, the layout provides three bedrooms, including two with en-suite facilities, alongside generous storage and utility spaces. At the heart of the home, an open-plan kitchen and living space provides a generous family environment with a strong visual and physical connection to the garden.

Sustainability is embedded within the design approach, from the orientation and form of the dwelling through to the consideration of materials, construction and energy performance. Additionally, the building’s orientation, landscape strategy and boundary treatments have been carefully considered to mitigate noise from the nearby roads and establish a more private and tranquil setting for the home.
