REIMAGINING THE POTENTIAL OF THE CHURCH

Studio BAD were appointed to undertake a feasibility study, including community engagement workshops, to review the potential of improvements to the existing church building, and provisions for housing development options on the site of St. Gabriels  Church in the Weoley Castle district of Birmingham.

The church sits within a large estate of council-built housing from the 1930s, within a dense residential suburb. The Church is a focal point in the community however the church building is in a state of disrepair and currently not being used, with all services being held in the adjacent church hall.

The feasibility study has looked at how the existing church building could be renovated to create a multifunction space that could be subdivided in order to support different groups from across the local community needs, alongside the faith needs.

Redevelopment options for the wider site have been looked into, in order to maximise the potential of supporting the local community with the delivery of a modern social housing scheme.
