Expanding the offer

Studio BAD are working with a faith-based independent school in Hampshire, to provide a concept design to explore how the school may be able to add additional pre-school and infant teaching facilities to their existing site.

We determined that a single-storey extension would be most efficient, to reduce access issues and allow the classrooms to all directly adjoin the outside space with covered verandas. With two rows of classrooms situated on either side of a shared corridor/break-out space; the pre-school room would also include a large outdoor learning area.

A gabled design to the roofs was chosen, to replicate the form of the existing buildings with modern cladding and glazing systems. The gabled roof is also open and visible from inside, giving a sense of height within the classrooms and allowing elements such as lighting and educational projects to be hung. There is also the potential to place solar panels to the south-facing roofs and rooflights to the north-facing roofs.

The project is currently at feasibility stage.
