REIMAGINING THE PERIOD PROPERTY

Studio BAD have secured planning permission to sympathetically refurbish and extend a Grade II listed Regency villa in central Southampton. The design will deliver a scheme that enhances the rich, historic personality of the original dwelling and upgrade the energy efficiency of the dwelling, to create a functional, joyful home for the owners and their young family.

The four-storey listed townhouse was original built circa 1835, since this time it has lost much of its original grandeur, with a poorly built extension added, and most recently the property has been subdivided into a House of Multiple Occupancy (HMO). Our design looks to strip back the modern, out of place additions and internal stud partitions, to restore the home to a single dwelling, with an extensive refurbishment to uncover and embrace the original period features to recreate the house as a comfortable family home. By replacing the current, poorly constructed extension with a high-quality, largely glazed structure we will transform the rear of the property with a spacious kitchen running across the whole elevation of the home, bringing back a sense of symmetry and balance to the façade.

The high-quality extension will hold a spacious, open plan kitchen and living space, designed across a split level with integrated steps and seating to connect the garden in a meaningful way, and to help zone the internal space. Finished with generous glazing, the change in architectural language is used as a visual distinction between the old and new aspects of the property. Stylistically the design is likened to an ‘orangery’ with light crittal style glazing, deliberately subservient to the main dwelling to easily be read as a modern addition. Due to the north facing orientation of the extension it was possible to maximise the glazing, working positively with its solar orientation to draw in as much daylight without the risk of overheating.

On the first floor a master suite and two bedrooms will be created, with two further bedrooms utilising the existing bathrooms as ensuites on the second floor with the top floor dedicated to a multifunctional family room and family bathroom. The existing basement space will be converted to create usable space with a home office and a separate plant room.
